mostly frog and toad fanfiction

frog feeds the fish

frog sits on a bench, looking at the lake. fish are swimming, waterskeeters are about, and cicadas buzz.

toad comes by after a while, whistling a disjointed little tune

frog: "aw.. you scared the fish"

toad: "they'll be back. here I brought you this" (he brings a little baggie of pellets for feeding the fish)

frog smiles and takes it.

they sit together a while.

frog: "some cicadas only come out every decade or something"

toad: "oh?"

frog: "they live most of their lives underground."

toad throws another pellet into the water and the fish break the surface in excitement.

frog: "what do you think it feels like?"

toad: "living underground?"

frog: "no, to climb up out of it"

toad thinks for a while.

toad: "it must feel like living, or maybe like dying.

either way, i'm happy to share this evening with them"

frog: "me too. but I'm getting all sweaty out here and my legs ache. let's go home."

a warm breeze makes little ripples in the lake, and the two walk home together holding hands.
