it's during the attunement process where dandelion learns the difference between love and wanting
affection, infatuation, resentment, strong feelings of any kind create psychic imbalances in the flower organ which... during spaceflight in the enclosed space could create a deadly resonance... and that's not accounting for cosmic rays and other radiation
what it looks like to care for someone in deep space is much different from what it looks like on earth
in space, love looks nearly like silence, it is invisible. it looks like responsibility.
on earth, most people are not subjected to the modifications needed for spaceflight, so the human analogues of flowers are typically mild in output (although extreme circumstances create exceptions regularly). important however, is the atmosphere which acts to regulate psychic output and diffuse it. of course local resonance does still sometimes occur to disastrous effects.... but far more often things diffuse, absorbed by the ozone layer (a mechanism analogous to the absorption of ultraviolet light). so on earth, love and wanting don't always look so different (and this ambiguity can cause pain).
